Sleeping In Dentures Linked to Pneumonia

A recent study from the Journal of Dental Research in Japan at the Nihon University of Dentistry released information stating people who wear dentures while sleeping double their risk of pneumonia.

The study focused on a group of more than 500 adults over the age of 85. The volunteer participants were screened for oral health and hygiene as well as medical issues and were reexamined each year until first hospitalization or death of pneumonia.

During the three-year follow up, 20 patients died of pneumonia and another 28 were hospitalized for it. The study group included 453 denture wearers, of those who wore dentures, 186 wore them during sleep.

The doctor leading the study, Dr. IInuma and colleagues found that overnight denture wearers had a 2.3 times higher risk of developing pneumonia than people who removed their dentures at night.

The study also linked overnight denture wearing to dental plaque, gum inflammation and other oral health issues. The researchers concluded that clinical physicians should discourage their patients from wearing their dentures through the night.
