Regular Visits Recommended by the ADA

Regular visits to the dentist for cleanings are a very important part of maintaining a healthy smile. Cleanings done by a hygienist are called Preventative Treatment.  The term preventative is key, hygienists perform what is called a prophylaxis which by definition is “a measure taken to maintain health and prevent the spread of disease.” At your visits, the doctor does a comprehensive exam to make sure there aren’t any problems that need to be addressed; this assures your dental health and safety.

The American Dental Association recommends regular dental visits, at intervals determined by your dentist according to your past and present health history.

The University of Michigan School of Dentistry explored the link between long-term tooth loss and frequency of preventative dental visits in adults with and without the risk factors of periodontal disease. The risk factors are smoking, diabetes and genetic variations. The study found that personalized oral care is a necessity for good dental health; the ADA encourages people to work diligently with their dentists to identify any possible risk factors that would determine the need for frequency and follow up visits to develop the outcomes of preventative care.
