Does Drinking Beer Help Fight Cavities?

Hops in beer are what create its unique aroma and bitterness. Scientists are now reporting that antioxidant extracts from hops, known as bracts, could be helpful in fighting gum disease and cavities. This was reported in a recent study in the American Chemical Society’s Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry. The bracts create an environment on tooth surfaces that prevent the bacteria responsible for cavities and gum disease from sticking to tooth surfaces.

In the United States farmers harvest about 2300 tons of hops each year, and a healthy hop plant can grow up to one foot in a day. The bracts, which are not used for making beer, are discarded. Potentially these large amounts of bracts could be used for preventive measures in dentistry.
