What is the hardest tissue in the human body? Enamel.
Enamel is the thin outer covering of a tooth. Enamel is a translucent and thin cover for your teeth, yet a very essential part of the anatomy of teeth.
The purpose of enamel is to protect your teeth from the chewing, biting, crunching and grinding that happen every day. Although enamel is very hard, it is common for it to get cracked or chipped.
The breakdown of enamel is most commonly caused by things such as drinking excessive amounts of soft drinks, fruit drinks, having dry mouth, acid reflux, gastrointestinal problems, the taking of certain medications, and sometimes things like genetics and environmental factors can come into play.
An indicator of enamel loss is extreme sensitivity to hot, cold and even sweet foods and drinks. If this happens, the best thing to do is see the dentist as soon as possible.
Ways to avoid losing and damaging enamel are to keep eating and drinking acidic foods and drinks to a minimum, chewing sugar free gum to reduce acid in the mouth, drinking a lot of water every day, and most importantly brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day!
